The Story Behind Cardus Banjos
A bluegrass banjo rooted in familiar tradition, shaped with a distinctive visual identity and custom-built character.
A familiar bluegrass banjo with its own visual identity.
The Cardus banjo was born from a simple idea: to create a bluegrass banjo that feels familiar in the hands of a traditional player, yet carries its own visual identity.
Its name comes from Cardus, the Latin word for thistle — a plant with a strong, elegant and slightly wild character. This became the inspiration behind the ornamentation, inlay work and overall decorative language of the instrument.
Cardus is not an attempt to replace the traditional bluegrass banjo. It is built on respect for it. The dimensions, playing feel and construction principles remain close to what experienced banjo players expect: the familiar pot size, scale length, neck feel and overall balance are preserved.
A familiar bluegrass foundation.
Many banjo players, especially in the bluegrass world, know exactly what they want from an instrument. The response, neck dimensions, scale, projection and overall feel matter deeply. A good banjo should not fight the player.
For this reason, Cardus keeps the essential proportions of a traditional bluegrass banjo. The goal was not to make a strange or experimental instrument for the sake of being different, but to build a reliable professional banjo with a unique visual voice.
Every bluegrass banjo from Coall Instruments is finished with quality nitrocellulose lacquer, chosen for its traditional use, refined appearance and natural feel under the hands.
Where Cardus begins to stand apart.
The most visible difference is in the decoration. The inlay design, ornamental details and headstock shape were created specifically for this model by Miro Durai, the maker behind Coall Instruments.
The headstock keeps the spirit of a classic banjo, but its outline and decoration give Cardus a more individual character. The goal was to create something recognizable without losing the dignity and balance of a traditional instrument.
This is where Cardus finds its place: not as a radical departure from banjo tradition, but as a handcrafted banjo for players who appreciate tradition and still want their instrument to feel personal.
Built around the player.
As with every Coall instrument, Cardus can be adapted to the needs and preferences of the player. Some musicians want a familiar bluegrass feel with subtle visual changes. Others are looking for a more personal custom banjo with specific materials, details or setup choices.
One of the important custom options is the choice of tone ring. Cardus can be built with different ring options, including a stone tone ring developed by Coall Instruments. This ring can be heard in the Cardus video demonstration.
Neck dimensions can also be discussed. For example, players with larger hands or wider fingers may prefer a slightly wider nut width, while still keeping the overall character of a professional bluegrass banjo.
A banjo with tradition in its body and personality in its details.
Cardus is made for banjo players who respect the classic sound and feel of a bluegrass instrument, but also enjoy the idea of owning something more personal.
It is a banjo for musicians who do not necessarily want to leave tradition behind — they simply want an instrument that carries a little more of their own story.
From the thistle-inspired ornamentation to the custom headstock design and possible tone ring choices, Cardus represents one of the most recognizable models from Coall Instruments.
Familiar where it matters. Individual where it speaks.
