Miro Durai - Coall Instruments

From curiosity to craftsmanship.

My journey into instrument making began with a simple question — where does sound really come from, and how can it be shaped by hand? That curiosity gradually turned into a craft and a lifelong pursuit.

I built my first banjo in 2011 alongside luthier Robert Neuszer, who became my mentor and guided me through the early stages of the process. In 2015, I founded Coall Instruments as a way to fully dedicate myself to building instruments with character and individuality.

With a background in woodworking and historical restoration, I approach each instrument with a strong sense of detail, structure and respect for materials. Every banjo and mandolin is built by hand, with attention not only to sound, but also to feel, balance and long-term playability.

An important part of my journey was also the collaboration with Richard Ciferský and the Banjolit brand, where we developed innovative wooden armrests designed to improve comfort and the playing experience. After many prototypes and refinements, these designs found their way to musicians around the world.

The story behind Coall

A personal approach to every instrument.

The name “Coall” has a simple and personal origin. Friends used to call me “Koala” for years, inspired by the animal. When I tried to register it as an email, the name was already taken — and the system suggested “Coall”. It stayed, and gradually became the identity of the brand.

Today, Coall Instruments is based in Bratislava, Slovakia — in the heart of Europe — where each instrument is built in a small workshop, one by one.

My goal is to build instruments that are not only well-made, but deeply personal. Whether it is a traditional bluegrass banjo, a mandolin or a custom design, each instrument should reflect the player — in sound, feel and visual character.

I work closely with musicians to shape each build around their style, expectations and musical identity. The result is not just a product, but an instrument that can grow with the player over time.
